CHAPTER 8

Ifelt as if the weight of the world was sitting on my shoulders. It was the first time since my Change that I felt physically sick. I don’t know what was wrong with me. My stomach was cramping, and my head was pounding. I could hear Ronan and Uncle Sean as if they were talking through a fog. They were calling my name, and someone was shaking me by the shoulders, but I couldn’t respond. In fact, I could not move a muscle.

I was stuck. Literally. Somewhere in the in-between was my guess. When the humming and the tiny little flashes of lightning jumping around all over my skin finally stopped, I was able to open my eyes. It was pitch black, but with my Wolf vision, I could see just fine. I lifted my long lupine muzzle and sniffed the air. It was stale and cold, but not altogether unpleasant. My breath came out in little puffs. I was tensed on all fours, waiting for something to happen. Something always happened.

Then, quite suddenly, it did. The air began to take shape. What seemed to be a black sort of hole in the ground turned into a room with four walls and a floor and ceiling. Heat and light slowly seeped in and I heard someone enter through a door that also suddenly appeared out of nowhere. The noise of the knob turning, and the squeak of the rusty hinges was unusually loud, as if the person who opened it designed it that way, just so I would know he or she was there. A glowing orb proceeded him or her inside the room and I was momentarily blinded by how bright it was.

“Ah, so you are taking calls I see, this is good,” the sound of the familiar, lightly accented voice met my ears and my heart lifted. Supernaturally enhanced hearing or not I’d have recognized her by sound alone, the sweet, strong scent of cinnamon and spice that entered my nostrils was a bonus.

My gold Wolf eyes widened. I would know her anywhere. It was Sherry Morgan. Her aura glowed around her in beautiful, bright colors, all telling me that she was, as always, a friend. Her powers were great, and, as my Wolf, I sensed them here as I never did back home. This was a place of Magic, perhaps it was stronger for her too.

“I know, I know, I am glad to see you too, little Grazi. You know, I lit my candle days ago, I have been trying to reach you. There has been some activity here I thought you should know, but first would you like a treat? You know, I was going to simply offer you tea, but well, how does a Wolf drink tea? You know what, we shall make do! Here, nod if you’d like cream and sugar, please,” she smiled knowingly, and I nodded.

She waved her long, elegant hand and I smelled her spicy Magic at work. It was like coffee rolls and apple pie.
